ALTERNATIVE ROUTE WITH  SURPRISES

MOUNT BLANC PLAN B

Skitour Mont Blanc

A female customer in the age of the 60+, who is still in great shape although her advanced age, is a very good skier. She booked a tour in the Tarentaise region. She wanted to take one of the longest ski runs in the Italian ski area of La Thuile. A wonderful round tour starting with a helicopter flight, 2100 meters of breathtaking descent over glaciers and wide valleys to the small French town of La Masure. It should go back to the starting point via two ski areas.

Due to my many years of experience in this area, the preparations went quick and were routine. However, it was not easy to determine an adequate alternative tour that could create a comparable experience. I then found a tour in the Mont Blanc area – within reasonably close proximity – that had comparable characteristics. „Plan B“ tours are only a good substitute for me and my customers if they provide a comparable experience to the tour originally planned. It shouldn’t be a half-hearted bad weather program!

And in that case it was absolutely necessary. The Italian side of the Tarentaise was flooded by moist air masses and our planned tour was not possible due to fog and low hanging clouds.
Since the Mont Blanc is often also a weather divide, we were lucky in this case with our „Plan B“ tour: we escaped the murky La Thuile, and drove through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Chamonix. With the bright sunshine and arctic temperatures we were on the ascent onto the Aig du Midi with the Cable car.

The Valle Blanche layed ahead of us! In conjunction with the Meer de Glace, it is the longest descent in the Alps: 24 km long and 2600 vertical meters – 3.5 hours of enjoyable skiing in a unique setting.
The customer impressed me with her outstanding fitness and skiing skills. She was so enthusiastic about the alternative route that she will book „Plan B“ next time as „Plan A“.
